Panel Discussion: Social Media in Florida Government

FGTC Day One: Innovation | Tuesday, October 18, 2011 | 1:15 – 2:45 P.M.

Is Social Media an Ailment for IT?

Social Media

Social Media represents the leading edge of a global trend that increasingly outsources application services. Social Media as a form of “Cloud Computing” presents challenges and opportunities for IT and IT customers. Should IT fight this trend or embrace it? Florida government use of social media is widespread and growing. What scares users and IT departments the most about this growing trend? Social media provides opportunities for IT customers to achieve government objectives providing a low cost channel of communications that is viral, global and 24×7. Some of those objectives include increasing interaction and communications with stakeholders and increasing public participation and collaboration in open government. At the same time, there are many challenges to both users and IT professionals. The panel will explore these questions and the implications.

Panel Purpose

To provide insights and lessons learned from Florida Government uses of social media into the outcomes, drivers, future plans, challenges to users and IT, their organizations, access, security, policy and public records.
