Focus on Cyber Security

2010 saw more sophisticated and wider reaching malware attacks highlighting how susceptible U.S. infrastructure is to cyber-crime. The vulnerabilities that exist in public sector IT are compounded by the growing reliance on the highly decentralized and open Internet to serve constituents and the increased use of mobile technology. The time when most government computer systems still ran on dedicated networks that were relatively easy to protect is gone, changing what constituted a cyber-security threat from simply protecting a network from hackers to protecting information, systems, and citizens.

At the federal level, the President and his Cabinet have made cyber-security a national priority. However, the effort to protect the data of governments and citizens is a national mission that requires leadership, innovation, and resources at the state level. Reduced budgets, combined with the demand for rapid innovation, make it critical that state governments find creative and collaborative approaches along with outsourcing services and relying on third-party service providers to be more effective in combating security and reaching their goals.
